Digital technologies continue to reshape operations and marketing by creating new opportunities for innovation, automation, and improved decision-making. Our 6th Workshop on Digital Technologies in Operations and Marketing at TUM Campus Heilbronn brought together international scholars from operations and marketing to examine these developments through keynotes, research talks, and academic exchange. Across the workshop, several central themes emerged: the uneven pace of artificial intelligence adoption, the growing relevance of emerging technologies such as machine vision and immersive environments, the methodological contributions of neuroscience, and the broader societal costs associated with digital transformation.

Artificial Intelligence Adoption and Digital Transformation

Artificial intelligence is increasingly transforming operational processes and organizational decision-making. Its potential benefits are becoming clearer across industries, particularly in relation to efficiency, analytical capacity, and strategic support. However, the pace of AI adoption remains slower than expected. This gap between technological potential and organizational implementation suggests that digital transformation cannot be understood as a purely technical process. Instead, organizational, behavioral, and implementation-related challenges continue to limit the speed and depth of transformation.

Emerging Technologies and Future Opportunities

Beyond artificial intelligence, emerging technologies such as machine vision, virtual reality, and augmented reality are opening new avenues for operational innovation. Machine vision supports automation, monitoring, and operational efficiency, while immersive technologies are becoming increasingly relevant for training and operational support. These developments indicate that future digital innovation will depend not only on the advancement of individual technologies, but also on their practical integration into organizational processes and learning environments.

Research Advancements and Methodological Innovation

The workshop also highlighted important methodological developments in the study of digital transformation. Neuroscience is enabling a new level of rigor in behavioral operations management and digital transformation research by allowing researchers to better understand cognitive and behavioral responses to digital technologies. As neuroscience-based methods become more accessible and feasible, they can be applied across a broader range of research projects. This increased accessibility strengthens the empirical foundations of research on how individuals perceive, evaluate, and interact with digital technologies.

Societal Costs and Challenges of Digital Transformation

While digital transformation offers substantial opportunities, it also creates significant societal challenges. The spread of misinformation and fake news remains a major concern and points to the need for a better understanding of underlying motivations as well as the development of effective prevention mechanisms. Automation can increase efficiency, yet it may also reduce opportunities for skill development and workplace learning, thereby slowing career progression. In addition, human biases and racial stereotypes can be transferred to interactions with robots and AI systems, creating new challenges for inclusion and fairness. Data privacy initiatives provide important protection, but they may also introduce compliance costs and organizational trade-offs.

Conclusion

Taken together, the discussions at the 6th Workshop on Digital Technologies in Operations and Marketing demonstrate that digital transformation is both an opportunity and a complex organizational challenge. Artificial intelligence, machine vision, immersive technologies, and neuroscience-based research methods all contribute to the future of digital innovation. However, successful adoption requires careful attention to human, organizational, and societal considerations. The overall takeaway is that digital technologies continue to offer substantial opportunities for innovation and operational improvement, but successful adoption requires balancing technological benefits with human, organizational, and societal considerations.
