Assessment Procedure 2026

Initial Processing: Formal Entry Requirements

After you submit your application in TUMonline, the TUM Center for Study and Teaching will verify that all formal requirements were met, for example:

  • Are all required documents uploaded?
  • Are all required documents readable?
  • Is the photo in your photo ID blurry?
  • Have any documents exceeded their validation date?
  • Language proficiency with either your German or English secondary school grades.

After formal requirements are met, the TUM Center for Study and Teaching will begin point calculation for stage 1. If your application is rejected for formal reasons, it would be the the TUM Center for Study and Teaching that rejected your application and not the TUM School of Management admissions team.

Stage 1: Final GPA + Individual Grades + Additional Qualifications

The TUM Center for Study and Teaching (CST) will create a weighted GPA (German or English 1x, Mathematics 2x, and your best science course 2x) for each applicant based on the tables below. For science, natural sciences as well as computer science / informatics are considered.

For applicants with a German Abitur, the CST will take the final Abitur grade into account, as well as the four individual semester grades in Mathematics, German or English, and an advanced science subject.

For applicants with an international university entrance qualification (secondary school diploma/certificate), the CST will take the final GPA and the grades received in the last two years of secondary school in the subjects Mathematics, German or English, and an advanced science subject into account.

*Not everyone has four semester grades in last two school years and a subject-specific grade in final exam. If this applies to you, please use the grade you have. As you can see later, the amount is considered. Grade 1 is for semester 1, Grade 2 is for semester 2, etc. Grade 5 is for your final grade in this subject.

  • Nmax is the best possible grade in your grading system, Nmin the lowest possible passing grade in your grading system.
  • Mathematics, science, and German/English are the subject specific grades.
  • During calculation process, there is some rounding. For breveity, this is excluded from the tables below. For more information, please refer to the current program statute.
  • This information is provided for transparency and so applicants can make their own estimate.

Up to 4 points could be granted for evidence of extracurricular qualifications, vocational training, or competitions relevant to the study program. The following activities can be considered as extracurricular qualifications or additional qualifications:

  • Vocational training or apprenticeship
  • Internships
  • Successful participation in the MINT program
  • Participation with distinction at the state level academic competition

Applicants may earn an available 100 points at the first stage of the assessment procedure.  Results above 100 points are theoretically possible due to additional qualifications.

The result of stage 1 either leads to:

  • Direct admission: if the application reaches 88 points or more. This does not apply if the application lacks subject-specific individual grades; in this case, it will move to the second stage of the procedure.
  • Continue on to the admissions test (stage 2): if the application reaches between 67 and 87 points.
  • Rejection: if the application only reaches 66 points or less. This also applies if the application lacks individual subject-specific grades and does not reach the minimum score to move to the second stage.

Applications with less than 67 points can move to the second stage of the procedure if the applicant:

  • Submits proof that they have completed two years of vocational training relevant to their studies.
  • Was enrolled in the same or a related degree program and provided proof that they have completed at least 20 credits per semester.

Stage 1 is processed almost entirely by the TUM Center for Study and Teaching, as such, the TUM SOM admissions team is unable help calculate how many points an applicant may recieve.

Admissions and rejections in stage 1 are done by the TUM Center for Study and Teaching and not the TUM SOM admissions team. Applicants who move onto stage 2 then have their applications sent by the TUM Center for Study and Teaching to the TUM SOM admissions team.

Stage 2 Overall GPA + Admissions Test

The second stage of the assessment process is an admissions test consisting of 30-40 single choice questions and a mini-essay. Participants are given 60 minutes to complete the admissions test. The admissions test can be taken in German or English. We recommend you to choose the language in which you feel more comfortable.

The sections of the admissions test are:

  • Application of mathematical and logical reasoning skills (30%)
  • STEM Knowledge (30%)
  • Mini-essay for a question concerning business and technology (40%)

We do not provide preparation materials for the admissions test. The admissions test is available online or in-person. Taking the admissions test in-person is at no cost, the online admissions test is proctored by Proctorio, an external service provider, and costs 25$USD paid to Proctorio. Proctorio requires payment with a credit card.

Applicants may earn up to 100 points at the second stage of the assessment procedure. Applicants who earn 70 points or more during the admissions test will gain admission to the program. If 69 or fewer points are earned, this will mean a rejection.

Previous application cycles used a group-interview in place of the admissions test. If you previously recieved admission to the program, your admission is still valid.
